What the Fool card actually means

The Fool is the card on the front of this site, so I should probably explain why.

Card zero

The Fool is numbered nothing. It sits before the deck begins, which means it isn't one step of a journey — it's the willingness to take a first step at all. Every other card in the Major Arcana is something the Fool meets along the way.

He's mid-stride at a cliff edge, sun overhead, small dog at his heels, everything he owns in a bundle on a stick. People see the cliff and think the card is warning them. It isn't.

The Fool isn't naive. He's unencumbered — and those look identical from a distance.

What it's actually asking

Not recklessness. Beginning before you feel ready — because the readiness people wait for mostly doesn't arrive.

Notice how little he carries. That's the real instruction. The Fool can move because he isn't dragging every previous version of the situation with him. When this card appears for someone stuck, the block is almost never a lack of options; it's the weight of what they're insisting on bringing.

The dog

Easy to miss, and my favorite detail. The little dog at his heels is instinct — the part of you that notices the edge without needing to catalogue it. The Fool isn't walking blind. He's walking accompanied.

That's the difference between recklessness and trust. Recklessness ignores the dog.

What to do when you draw it

Ask: what would I start if I didn't need to be sure first?

Then look at what you'd have to put down to do it. Usually the answer isn't more preparation — it's less luggage.

And the reason the Fool is on the front of this site: anyone arriving at a reader's website is standing exactly where he's standing. A question in hand, not yet sure, considering a step. That's the good place to be.
